What if I miss my flight at Brussels Airport?
😯 Stay calm
There is no reason to panic. Stay calm and go straight to the airline desk. Find your airline's desk and ask if it is possible to take the next flight or rebook your trip.
The options depend on your tickets. The cheapest tickets (Economy) are often not flexible. You usually have to come up with a new ticket. Other tickets, for example Business Class, do allow rebooking.
Luggage
If you had checked baggage but missed your flight, contact the airline immediately. Your suitcase may not fly without you. The airline will take it out again.Â
âš– Rights for missed flights
Important: EU passenger rights (EU261) usually do not apply if you were late yourself.
They do apply when the airline is at fault, such as when a connecting flight is delayed or misleading information is provided.
Connecting flight missed due to first flight delay
If you miss a connecting flight because the first flight was delayed, and both flights are on one booking, the airline is responsible.
The airline must offer you a new flight to your final destination free of charge.
If you are delayed by more than 3 hours upon arrival at your final destination, you may be entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation depends on the distance of the flight:
- €250 for flights up to 1,500 km.
- €400 for flights of 1,500 km to 3,500 km, or more than 1,500 km within the EU.
- €600 for flights over 3,500 km outside the EU (unless the delay was less than 4 hours, in which case the amount is halved).
You are also entitled to care (food and drink) if the delay exceeds 2 hours. If the new flight departs the next day, you are also entitled to hotel accommodation and transportation.
Flight canceled
If your flight is canceled at Brussels Airport, the airline must offer you a choice between:
- An alternate flight to your final destination at no extra cost.
- A refund of your ticket.
If the flight was canceled less than 14 days before the departure date, you are often also entitled to the aforementioned compensation (up to €600), unless the cancellation was caused by "extraordinary circumstances" (such as extreme weather or air traffic control strikes).
📃 Preserve evidence
Keep good records of all your travel documents, such as your boarding pass and confirmation e-mail. Ask the airline for the reason for the delay or cancellation and save emails or other messages you receive.
