My home has been declared uninhabitable—what should I do now?

If the mayor decides that your home is uninhabitable and you must leave it, these are your options and obligations:
- Follow the mayor's order. In the event of an immediate danger, an immediate evacuation may be ordered.
- Contact your local municipality or the OCMW. They can help you find temporary or other suitable housing if you need to move.
- Don’t just terminate the lease. A declaration that the property is uninhabitable does not automatically terminate the lease. If you want a rent reduction, compensation, or termination of the lease, a decision by the justice of the peace may be required.
- Find out about financial assistance. Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for a rental subsidy or other forms of assistance.

If you have identified serious defects (such as a risk of collapse, severe moisture problems, unsafe electrical wiring, or a CO hazard) and the landlord takes no action, you can file a formal request with the municipality to initiate the process of declaring the property unfit for occupancy or uninhabitable. The municipality will investigate the complaint and, if necessary, call in a housing inspector.
